Photography Assignments

My name is Fin and I am majoring in Communications with a minor in Art. My sister is a wedding photographer and has taught me some of the basics, I have also taken one photography class before. I've taken tons of photos on my phone to capture moment I would like to relive later. I would say I am more silly than serious when it comes to taking photos while still trying to capture the beauty of the moments.

1.) Learn more about the basic of photography
2.) Be able to tell a story with my photos
3.) Be proud of each of my assignments

Descriptive - Apple.com
Aesthetically Evaluative - Fin Volk

Descriptive: This photograph of an IPhone from Apple.com is descriptive because it wants to display what the product looks like so people will buy it.

Explanatory: My photograph is explanatory because it is moving boxes which means that I am moving.

Interpretive: My photograph is interpretive because it has multiple meanings that can be found and interpreted in however the viewer wants.

Aesthetically Evaluative: This photograph is aesthetically evaluative because it is easy on the eyes and satisfying to look at. The puffy clouds and soft blue sky highlight the lamp post in a positive way.

Ethically Evaluative: Jerome Liebling photograph is ethically evaluative because this boy is a symbol of hope and escape from poverty. This photograph is called "Butterfly Boy"

Theoretical: This photograph called "Destroyed Room" by Jeff Wall is theoretical because it uses the lightbox which is typically associated to advertising. It was also constructed with the photograph in mind.
Sally Mann
For my presentation I interpreted the work of Sally Mann, specifically two pieces. The first piece I looked at was "Was Ever Love" which I thought to be very interesting. I believed it was an interpretive piece because if Sally never explained her thoughts I would've interpreted this piece as a love yourself idea. Though, the real reason behind the photos being loving while growing old makes this photograph that much more meaningful, especially since the main subject for the photographic series is her husband. The second piece I discuss throughout my presentation is “The Two Virginias" and this piece can also be interpretive. The photograph I display on the last slide is of the nanny Virginia with the daughter Virginia in her lap. Without the context that Sally provides you only see a picture of someone very young hanging out with someone who is very old. It could be interpreted as a timeskip or the portrayal of the future. The young Virginia sitting in the lap of her future self. Instead it was two separate people who both greatly matter to the photographer.
Reviewing this photographer’s work has changed my perception of photography to be more open. Typically I wouldn't think to involve the people that matter to me into my photography, but Sally Mann does it all the time with her husband, daughter, and nanny.

I decided to take this course to learn more about the basic of photography, be able to tell a story with my photos, and be proud of each of my assignments. I believe I have achieved my goals as I have hoped. I learned more about the basics of photography though the modules. I told a story though my bike photo in the third assignment. Lastly, I am very proud of the work I've accomplished throughout this course. I had a lot of fun and enjoyed making this website and completing the assignments. Thank you for reading :)
